We're continuing to build Flexibility Service Markets, with over 100 MW of volume accepted and a new contracting opportunity launched.

Flexibility is the ability to shift the timing and location of both the consumption and generation of electricity. As more low carbon technologies - such as electric vehicles, solar panels and heat pumps - connect to the grid alongside distributed energy resources, flexibility plays an essential role in managing constraints on the network and supporting the smart-grid technologies that allow a cost-effective transition to net zero.

We've already successfully implemented the key deliverables in our Flexibility Roadmap with the new ElectronConnect market platform, introduction of month-ahead markets and local flexibility requirements. This has resulted in Overarching Agreements being signed with 23 different companies.

We are now launching the next opportunity to sign the contract, with the availability window open from 7 April to 23 April 2025.

Signing the contract allows participation in all future bidding rounds, with their next long term bidding round in May expected to cover requirements in 76 different areas across their North and South network areas.

Catherine Winning, our Flexibility Market Manager says:

“We’re delighted with the progress on market development we have made at SSEN made over the last year.

"This development allows different approaches to participate at different times with both long- and short-term markets being available in different locations.”

The use of ElectronConnect  streamlines the market entry process for Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs), and this three-year partnership is playing a key role in the transition to net zero across our two operating regions in central southern England and the north of Scotland.
