We’re moving to Weather Warning status in the north of Scotland ahead of a period of storm-force winds on Friday and Saturday which the Met Office is describing as the “strongest of the winter so far”. It has named this period of severe weather Storm Éowyn. This move to our Weather Warning status reflects our increased level of preparedness and our latest assessment of this weather’s potential impact over the weekend.
💨 The weather forecast
Heavy rain, followed by sustained storm-force winds, will move across the north of Scotland from early on Friday. Wind gusts will come from the south west, with speeds of between 60-70mph expected on the west coast of mainland Scotland and the islands, and 50-60mph inland. In exposed areas, gusts in excess of 80mph are possible.
We’ll continue to closely monitor our own forecasts, along with those from the Met Office during this period. The Met Office has issued Yellow Weather Warnings for wind for Friday and Saturday.
👷 How SSEN is responding
We’re activating our well-rehearsed contingency plans and bringing in additional teams to deal with any damage to the network and subsequent faults, which may interrupt customers’ power supplies.
We’ll continue to monitor the weather forecast closely and will issue further updates depending on the forecast.
