Wrights Meadow Centre has been at the heart of a recent volunteering day organised by our Large Capital Delivery team and our contractor partner, KUS.

The Wycombe Marsh charity-run centre provides invaluable services for adults with learning difficulties and offers space for various community groups, and has been kind enough to help members of our project team during the nearby upgrade of our substation.

To thank them for their generosity, four of the project team took a day away from their usual roles and used their ‘Be the Difference’ volunteering time to tidy up the community centre’s outdoor spaces, as well as donating new office chairs and filing cabinets to help enhance the centre’s facilities.

Greg Edgecock, our Project Manager for Wycombe Marsh said:

"This is a fantastic opportunity to give back to a neighbour who supported us so much – providing overflow car parking, a friendly face, and often selling delicious breakfasts, which became a routine visit for our site team to have a hot meal and support the charity-run community centre.

“The team had a great day ticking off the tasks that included raking the gravel in the car park to level it and painting the fence, plant pots, gates, gazebo, and shed. We’ve built a strong bond with Wrights Meadow Centre, and it feels great to contribute to their wonderful work."

Paula Lee, Centre Manager from Wrights Meadow Centre added:

“Our community centre has had a difficult year with boiler, plumbing, gas and electrical failures. The outside area had been neglected and, due to our lack of funds, volunteers were struggling to keep up with the tasks, so we are eternally grateful to the team from SSEN, who offered their time to help us get the space summer-ready.

“Raking the car park, fixing the planters and painting our pergola and fences would have taken us months to complete, but they were able to complete the jobs in just a few hours. It's a real weight off our shoulders! Without the kindness and generosity from people like SSEN and KUS, we couldn’t exist to support our community in the way that we do. So, thank you, from us all at Wrights Meadow Centre.”

This community project has been carried out through our volunteering programme, Be the Difference, which empowers colleagues to take time away from the day job to give back to the communities they serve and make a positive impact.

The Wycombe Marsh substation project is nearing its scheduled completion date at the end of spring and will strengthen the local electricity network against severe weather, while providing a supply fit for the future as more local homes and business take up low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles, solar panels and heat pumps.
