A challenge to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association has been completed by colleagues at Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution, with hundreds of pounds gathered to donate to the national charity.

During November, colleagues from SSEN’s distribution patches in central southern England and north of Scotland walked, ran, cycled, climbed, rowed and swam 1,275 kilometres between them and raised £575 along the way.

Initially setting out to cover 750 kilometres - the distance between their bases in Portsmouth and Perth - the team exceeded their goal by more than 500 kilometres; collectively covering the distance to take them from SSEN’s depots on the Isle of Wight to the Orkney Islands.

Through a mix of walking, swimming, rowing and cycling the team tackled their challenge from a variety of unexpected locations across the UK, Europe and the United States – with kilometres collected on Scottish Munros, beaches abroad, in local leisure centres and even on rowing machines in garden sheds.

Their determination to contribute has been inspired by a shared mission to support their colleague, whose father was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Olivia Worthington, SSEN’s Vulnerability Strategy & Welfare Implementation Manager was instrumental in organising the fundraiser and explains:
“This challenge was about more than just total kilometres on a spreadsheet. It was about showing solidarity for our friend and colleague during a difficult time, and we’re delighted to have been able to work together to raise vital funds and awareness for this important cause.

“We’d like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to our effort, whether that was through donations, words of encouragement or participating in the challenge itself. The generosity and support of all involved will help make a meaningful impact, not just for one family but for many others who rely on the charity work of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.”

All funds raised will go towards supporting essential services provided by the charity - an organisation dedicated to assisting individuals and their families who are affected by the disease. SSEN’s match-funding contribution will add a further £250 to the total raised and it’s not too late to contribute, if you would like to.

This official page will remain open and welcoming further donations until the end of January 2025.
