SSEN Distribution welcomes the strong focus on energy in yesterday’s Autumn Statement, including the recognition that electricity networks, both national and local, have a vital role to play in achieving net zero emission targets, improving energy security and growing the economy in every corner of the country.

In addition, the publication of the joint Connections Action Plan provides important direction and ambition to help address a key area of opportunity – the reform of connections rules – at pace and at scale.

SSEN Distribution, in collaboration with other network operators, has already made big strides in implementing many of the recommendations and the Energy Networks Association (ENA) Strategic Connections Group provides a clear route for further progress in making connections both fairer and faster.

We will continue to play our part in the essential collaboration between industry and government to ensure bold decisions are made and deadlines on the Plan can be achieved.

We also welcome the decision by the UK Government to commission a study by the National Infrastructure Commission on making the electricity distribution networks fit for net zero.

In common with the Winser Review at a Transmission level, it is equally important that the need for infrastructure investment at a distribution level is fully assessed. This should include recommendations for the planning and system reform required to create the necessary future energy system communities and customers need, in the most efficient way.

We look forward to engaging fully in this process and sharing our work and thinking around a net-zero first investment strategy.
