Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is delighted to have won the Outstanding Contribution to Health, Safety and the Environment award at this year's National Skills Academy for Power (NSAP) Conference, for its 'Influencing Behaviours' programme. The programme delivered to more than 4,600 employees introduced and embedded SSEN's licence 'If it's not safe, we don't do it'.
The 'Influencing Behaviours' programme was designed in coordination with Karrdale and involved replicating real-life examples of scenarios in which SSEN staff find themselves every day. In 2017, the programme was delivered to employees and contract partners at 30 different locations across SSEN's network areas. The programme challenged SSEN employees to think differently about their beliefs and behaviours, promoting the importance of interdependency and a positive safety culture across the organisation.
SSEN has made an enduring commitment towards continuing the programme to ensure the new found understanding remains in the DNA of the business, with?around 2000 SSEN employees and contract partners receiving the training in 2019.
The 'Influencing Behaviours' programme identified that people, their behaviours, attitudes and actions are more important than procedures for achieving safe outcomes. SSEN's workforce are now regularly using their license together with the awareness of the human factors that often lead to incidents, to stop work and working together to get everyone home safely.
Now in its ninth year, the NSAP Conference with its 'People in Power' Awards is a skills summit for the power industry, enabling figures across the energy sector to meet peers and consider the big picture, helping facilitate a constant drive in innovation, productivity and upskilling. The theme of this year's event was Powering Productivity Through Innovation and with SSEN's 'Influencing Behaviours' programme of safety, the network operator showed how its innovate approach and delivery was producing tangible and impressive results.
This latest award for SSEN's 'Influencing Behaviours' is further credit and recognition for the safety programme this year, after it scooped the Health and Safety Initiative of the Year at the inaugural Network Awards 2019 in Birmingham this spring and the Utility Week safety award in Manchester in July 2018.
