Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has this evening returned to business as usual for its north of Scotland network region following the impact of Storm Ali.

From the early hours of Wednesday morning, Storm Ali brought a period of storm force winds, lightning and heavy rain, impacting much of the country. Wind gusts in excess of 70mph, rising to 90mph in exposed areas, were recorded throughout the weather event, causing damage to SSEN's overhead network as a result of falling trees and branches and wind borne debris. A number of direct lightning strikes to SSEN's overhead network also resulted in a number of faults.

Throughout the course of the event SSEN successfully restored power to around 28,000 customers, with only a handful of customers remaining off supply as of 9pm this evening. All outstanding faults are being worked on and all customers impacted by Storm Ali will have their power restored this evening.

Dale Cargill, Director of Customer Operations, said:

"I would like to thank all of our customers impacted by Storm Ali for their continued patience and I would also like to thank our operational and customer support teams for all their hard work to restore customer supplies and offer extra support where required."

"If anyone has any concerns for themselves or others who remain off supply, or to report a new fault, I would encourage them to give our teams a call on 105, get in touch via our website, www.ssen.co.uk; Facebook page, ssencommunity; or tweet us ssencommunity."

SSEN remains on Yellow Alert for its central southern England network region following the arrival earlier today of Storm Bronagh. SSEN has enacted its well-established resilience plans, increasing its standby resources in anticipation of any potential damage to its network and has moved its teams and equipment to the main areas due to be impacted.
