This essential project will enhance the reliability and security of the electrical supply to the community on Iona.

What work is being carried out?

The project will involve laying a new high voltage subsea cable across the Sound of Iona, replacing the existing infrastructure that has served these island communities for many years. The new cable is designed to meet current and future energy demands and ensure a stable power supply for residents and businesses on Iona.

Why is this work necessary?

The replacement of the subsea electrical cable will provide several essential benefits for the communities served by this part of the network. These benefits include increasing reliability, due to the improved cable technology, reducing the risk of potential power outages to Iona, and ensuring future capacity as the energy demands on the network continue to grow.

What environmental impact will there be from this work?

We are committed to conducting the cable replacement with minimal environmental impact. Comprehensive environmental assessments have been undertaken to identify and mitigate any potential effects to marine life and sensitive habitats in the Sound of Iona. We work together with organisations such as NatureScot, Historic Environment Scotland and RSPB to ensure all statutory licenses are obtained, and that all environmental requirements are complied with throughout the project.

How will this affect you?

We make it a priority to minimise disruption and engage with communities while we carry out this essential network upgrade. There are no Planned Supply Interruptions (PSI) scheduled as part of this project, and we will continue to engage with local residents, businesses and Argyll and Bute Council to keep them informed of our progress and address any concerns.

Safety is our number one priority

We remain dedicated to delivering a safe and reliable electrical supply to our customers, and we greatly appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the Mull and Iona communities while we undertake this essential infrastructure upgrade.
